I have come a long way from finishing as a B.Sc, Second Class Upper Division (Best Graduating with CGPA of 5.9) Honors student of Agricultural Extension Services, University of Ibadan, Oyo State in 1992. Since then I have lived and worked in Lagos and Benin cities for over 7 years as a Brewer, and later Training Manager in Guinness Nigeria Plc, before voluntarily resigning(and getting formal send-forth ceremonies)- in Dec. 2001 - to pursue a long-standing dream or running my own business.

All that time, I was "away", my heart remained in my field of study - which explains why today, I have apprenticed for over 5 months on a Catfish/ Ornamental Fish Farm(2002); attended Catfish Production Seminar(2004) among other things. PLUS I have a FULL business plan for my own Integrated Catfish Farm (complete with cash flow; profit/loss projections; production schedule; economics/capacity expansion projections etc) - which I have bundled with other resources on this CD for you.

This Handbook - was produced using my personal notes/records from being a member (and later serving as the Sales Coordinator) of a very industrious group of students - most in the Veterinary Medicine field of study - back in UI, called "SFRF - Student's Farm Research Foundation". Through this group, I learnt many essential principles/techniques for successful practical feed compounding. The fact remains that most people who rear livestock today in Nigeria do not really understand how to deliberately compound rations to achieve specific outcomes in their animals. They either adopt what someone else has used/says is okay, or they purchase commercial rations.

It is pertinent to note at this point, that I use POULTRY here only as a convenient label. The principles of feed compounding are universally applicable. That is why many livestock producers find it easy to use growers ration meant for instance for poultry to feed their Pigs, Grow Out Catfish etc. However, the purpose of my handbook is to show interested persons how they can exert greater influence on their feed composition by gaining a better understanding of how it is done etc.

I decided to write this handbook in April 2002, following my discovery that a need still exists for an easy to understand body of information on the subject of Feed formulation. I am currently developing an Automated Excel VB Ration Formulation Spreadsheet Package designed to make the process of computing the various ingredients in a ration quicker, easier and more accurate.

I believe the availability of an automated package will not detract from the usefulness of a handbook on feed formulation. This is because only a person with a sound understanding of the basis of feed formulation (nutrient balancing in diets, nutrient requirements in different birds etc) would be able to use the package. My hope is that persons who attend decide to set up livestock farm(s) of their own, would find the handbook to be a valuable reference on one of the most critical aspects of poultry/livestock management i.e. feed formulation.
