How To Be A Jack Of Many Trades AND Why It Can Make You Succeed More (N1000 Value)!

Unlike many other Nigerians, I adopted a very systematic approach to my entry into the world of business. Due to the nature of my business vision - which is to inform and educate those interested in equipping themselves to do what I have done, I was/am keen to test/document what worked and what did not. I also realised that studying what others who had done what I wished to do had to say, would stand me in good stead over the long haul.

So from Nigerian entrepreneurs of repute(who I'd rather not mention now), to European/American ones like Ken Gaebler, Tom Gorman, Jack Welch, James Cook, Herman Holtz(who is one of the world's most successful Independent Consultants with over 3 decades of International experience) etc, I sought knowledge. I read books written by all these people. Where possible I sought them out physically/via writing for more insight. I will confess here that at a point, I found that the ideas from the non-Nigerian gentlemen, were what I hung on to when things really got tough for me. They, in their books - Cook and Holtz in particular - had specifically acknowledged the need for certain individuals to function as Multipreneurs in order to survive - and in certain cases, like mine - to truly flourish. And they gave many personal examples of people they were familiar with, who did this successfully.

It is to these men, that I owe my successful survival through those dark moments in my take-off. As a Start-up entrepreneur, I have had cause to defend the multidisciplinary approach I employed in trying to generate alternative income streams for myself. Just like I mentioned in my latest Information Product: “25 Avoidable Mistakes No One Will Warn You About In Starting Your Own Business”, I will explain here that I chose to engage in multiple income-generating vocations, when I discovered that my major venture (i.e. Self-Development Educational Services) was not getting the level of patronage I had hoped for.

In order to keep going, I was forced to use my other skills in computer spreadsheet solutions development, aquarium business, creative writing etc to try supporting my family till my main business interest fully picked up. But that was only up till 2003. Today 10th Feb. 2005, I have acquired additional self-taught commercial competencies in Website design which in 2004 earned me six figure income on two(2) separate occasions.

A number of people have called my attention to what they consider the need to try pruning down the number of areas I am into, so that I could be “known for one thing”. In some ways I agree with them. But again, what they fail to see is that will get recognised for ONE thing - and that is my ability to intelligently multipreneur in a number of inter-related disciplines. If someone has not displayed the attributes, then the expression "MAN OF MANY PARTS" or "MULTI-TALENTED" etc would never have come into general usage!

In addition I honestly believe those who adopted a disapproving position did not put themselves in my shoes you see. They were not the ones who had to endure many months of rejection from prospective clients, even as my funds for business/personal expenses ran out!

Only my family I believe can really tell you how life-saving my multipreneurial abilities have been. This is because they were the ones that saw when an expected income source dried up temporarily only for the need for cash to be met by a totally unexpected request for another service I offered but had not received any request for in a while - or at all! This has happened too many times to count - BUT I have been counting/document each time it occurred. Any interested persons will get names, dates and phone numbers to verify my claims here.
